Non-commissioned officers in the Macedonian Army
Non-commissioned officers (NCOs) represent one of the key pillars of the Macedonian Army. They are the link between officers and soldiers, the bearers of practical military knowledge, discipline, and professional culture within the units. In modern armies, and especially in the armies of NATO member states, the non-commissioned officer corps plays a significant role in training, leadership, and the daily functioning of units. NCOs in every army are recognized as the backbone of the Army, a professional cadre that directly influences the combat readiness, morale, and efficiency of the units.
The non-commissioned officer corps consists of professional military personnel who possess appropriate military education, practical experience, and leadership skills. They are responsible for the direct management of units at the team and squad level; in some units, they serve as platoon leaders, but there are also staff NCOs who work in battalion headquarters and higher, as well as NCOs with logistical specialties. The primary task of NCOs in units is to implement soldier training, maintain discipline, and advise commanders in the process of planning and executing tasks. In practice, NCOs are the keepers of continuity and tradition within the units, as they most often possess significant operational experience and serve long-term within the same or similar organizational duties.
A particularly significant component in the functioning of the non-commissioned officer corps is the so-called support channel. This system represents a parallel but complementary mechanism to the chain of command, through which NCOs ensure continuity in the execution of orders, the maintenance of discipline, care for personnel, and monitoring the condition within units. Through the support channel, experienced NCOs—especially company first sergeants and main sergeants of battalions and higher—play a crucial role in conveying the superior's intent, but also in advising commanders on matters related to personnel, training, and morale.
In the Macedonian Army, there are several non-commissioned officer ranks that reflect the level of experience, responsibility, and leadership. The non-commissioned officer structure consists of the ranks: Sergeant (водник), Sergeant First Class (водник прва класа), Staff Sergeant (постар водник), Master Sergeant (постар водник прва класа), Sergeant Major (наредник), and Command Sergeant Major (главен наредник). As they progress in their careers, NCOs take on increasing responsibilities, from the direct management of a team or squad, to performing duties as first NCOs of a company, battalion, or higher commands, where they have a significant advisory role to the commanders.
